LEARNING TARGETS
READING
This week in reading, we will be starting a new text set with all of the pieces being nonfiction argumentative text. We will also be starting reading groups this week. Students are placed in flexible groups throughout the year based on assessment data, classroom performance, and understanding of specific skills.
Specific learning targets :
*text features (ex. bold words, charts, photographs, sidebars, etc.) and how they contribute to meaning
*text structures (chronology, comparison, and cause/effect)
*author's claim and their evidence
*understanding suffixes (their use and spelling)
WRITING
The students just finished their first 5-paragraph piece today on their favorite summer memory. They shared them with their classmates and received glowing reviews from one another. These graded papers will be sent home later in the week for you to review, sign, and send back to school with your child. We are starting a new personal narrative piece tomorrow about your child's favorite birthday. The students also took a spelling pretest this morning over long /a/ spelling patterns. Your child was placed in a spelling group based on their performance. Spelling lists can be found in your child's agenda. Our test will be on Friday.
Specific learning targets:
*simple and compound sentences
*word choice
*showing, not telling (using details to describe a situation rather than just telling what happened)
MATH
The first part of the week will be spent reviewing our current topic on different strategies to multiply x0, x1, x2, x5, x9, and x10. The students will be bringing home their completed and graded assessment practice on Tuesday and will test on Wednesday. Small groups meet every day during math as well. These small groups have additional learning targets based on the needs of the group. The students will take a pretest on our next topic on Thursday, which will assist me in placing them in small groups for our upcoming topic on multiplication properties and facts for 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8.
Specific learning targets:
*topic review
*distributive property of multiplication
*associative property of multiplication
